ABIM Study Guide

The ABIM EXAM is offered by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) so applicants can be ABIM board certified physicians.

In order to take the certification exam, applicants must meet the following criteria:

* Have pre-doctorate medical education
* Meet the training requirements set forth by the ABIM
* Be in good standing with licensing institution

The ABIM Exam currently offers applicants certification in the following areas:

* Cardiovascular Disease
* Critical Care
* Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism
* Geriatric Medicine
* Hematology
* Hospice & Palliative Medicine
* Interventional Cardiology
* Medical Oncology
* Nephrology
* Pulmonary Disease
* Rheumatology
* Sleep Medicine
* Transplant Hepatology

The ABIM holds registration periods for applicants to apply for access to the certification exam. During the registration time, an applicant must register for an account on their site, apply by filling out the forms, choosing the specialty they wish to certify, and then wait for a letter from the ABIM stating the date of the online exam.
All ABIM certification and re-certification exams are administered at Pearson VUE Test Centers throughout the country.

The ABIM exam is given once a year, with registration open typically in January. The ABIM exam typically takes 10 hours to complete, with the Cardiovascular Disease topic taking as long as 14 hours. The exam is broken into three two hour long sessions with breaks given every two hours, for up to 20 minutes. Applicants can choose not to break and continue testing.
Exams are taken at a computer, in a quiet and comfortable testing center. Photo ID is required on the day of the exam.
