The American College Test (ACT) is an assessment test given to junior high school students in order to assess their academic development and their ability to handle college-level work. ACT is not an aptitude exam or an IQ test. It is a curriculum-based examination so all the questions are based on what high school students have learned.
ACT is important because it tests if a student is ready for college. A good performance in the ACT will mean greater chances of being admitted to your preferred college or university.
The ACT exam is offered 4 to 6 times in a year. The frequency of the holding of the examinations depends on the US state. Normally, the test is held in September, October, December, February, April and June. The students are required to take it during their junior year since the result of the test will be sent to their prospective college schools and universities. However, some students retake the examination on their senior year.
ACT is a multiple-choice examination. The examination will test the students’ general knowledge and skills in English, Math, Science and Reading. However, examinees are under a time constraint. There are 215 questions in the examination, to be taken within 2 hours and 45 minutes:
* 75 questions in English for 45 minutes
* 60 questions in Math for 60 minutes
* 40 questions in Science for 30 minutes
40 questions in Reading for 30 minutes
* Optional essay test for 30 minutes
At the time of writing (Sept 2008) the basic registration fee for taking ACT is $31. If you choose to take the essay test, the ACT Plus Writing costs $46. This includes sending the examination score report to up to 4 colleges of your choice. Normally, the test results are released 6 to 8 weeks after the examination date.
