The Alabama High School Graduation Exam (AHSGE) grants students their diploma upon receiving a passing grade. The test was implemented over ten years ago to ensure students had the proper schooling to function in the workplace or in college. The test examines basic fundamentals of the student’s education and they receive a score based upon the test results.
The test is administered to all Alabama graduating students. It is a compulsory test with no fees.
Alabama high school students are given five chances to take the test throughout their senior year. The test is given over a period of five days, with each day focusing on a different topic.
The AHSGE focuses on four main testable topics in the four day time span. Students will be required to show aptitude in Algebra I and Geometry in the math portion, basic American history knowledge in the social studies section, reading comprehension through a series of paragraphs and sentences, and show adequate vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure skills in the language portion of the test.
The AHSGE is a vital test for any Alabama senior. Many employers look at the AHSGE as a critical hiring mechanism when dealing with recent graduates. Universities and colleges also consider the AHSGE score in their admission process – even out of state schools.
All AHSGE test sessions last three hours, but students have the right to stay longer to complete their work. It is an untimed test, so it is advised to make use of the extra time if necessary. All four sections of the test have 100 multiple choice questions.
