The AODA Exam is given by the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium/Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse, Inc. (IC&RC) to test provide certification for Alcohol and other Drug Abuse counselors.
Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements to take the AODA exam:
* 6,000 hours of work experience in the Alcohol and Drug Abuse field. An Associate’s degree counts for 1,000 hours, Bachelor’s degree counts for 2,000 hours, and a Master’s degree counts for 4,000 of the 6,000 total needed. The degree must be in a corresponding field.
* The counselor must have at least 6 hours of ethics training and 270 hours of domain specific experience.
* Applicants must have 300 hours of supervised duties specific to the field, with an emphasis on the 12 core functions of the domain – each segment having at least 10 hours of supervised study or application.
The twelve core functions of an Addictions Counselor are as follows:
* Client Screening
* Client Intake
* Client Assessment
* Treatment Planning
* Client Orientation
* Counseling: Individual, Group and Family
* Crisis Intervention
* Referral
* Consultation
* Reports and Record Keeping
* Client Education
* Case Management
Accreditation exams are available four times a year as either a paper and pencil test or through a computer based testing center. Local boards of the IC&RC determine the dates and location of the exams. To find out the next available date, check with the local IC&RC board.
The AODA exam costs $250, but may change depending on the local board requirements. Most boards require membership at a cost of $150 to take the exam.
