The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) offered by the California Department of Education (CDE) grants a successful student with the rights to their high school diploma. Those who do not pass the exam can retake it for another chance to exit their high school with a diploma.
The exam’s purpose should not be taken lightly. It measures a student’s academic performance against legislative standards for students receiving a California education. The test is broken into two major sections, Math and English. The standards for the test ask students to be at least a tenth grade level on their reading and comprehension. The Math portion is much more forgiving, asking students to be at least at a grade level six and seven with regards to basic math and algebra.
The math portion of the exam will ask many different multiple-choice questions. The questions can come from any form of basic math, statistics, data analysis, measurement, or geometry. There will be word problems, basic formula knowledge, and mathematical reasoning during this portion of the exit exam. The math portion of the exam consists of 92 different multiple-choice questions.
The reading portion will have students answer questions based on vocabulary, reading comprehension, analysis of information, and literary works. The student should have a clear understanding of basic writing rules, logistics, and grammar analysis skills. There may be spelling, punctuation, and other grammar related questions involved in the exam. The English part of the exam consists of 79 multiple-choice questions.
