CAHSEE Study Reviews

The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) offered by the California Department of Education (CDE) determines a student’s overall performance in a variety of subjects. The exit exam was implemented to gauge a student’s performance across math, reading, and writing. The test ensures the student has received adequate schooling to fulfill duties outside of the classroom.

The exit exam came about in 2000 after the state legislature determined the proficiency standards were below high school level. To accurately gauge the student’s high school education level, the CAHSEE came into existence.

The CAHSEE exam is only offered through public high schools on dates set by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. The test is first administered to a student in the tenth grade. At that time, they must pass the ELA and mathematics portion of the exam. Those who did not pass any part of the CAHSEE can retake it up to two times in their junior year and up to five times in their senior year. Passing the CAHSEE is a requirement to graduate in California.

The CAHSEE can be administered in a few different ways, including modifications to the content and adding accommodations for certain students. The exam is available for adult students. Any adult student who does not pass a portion of the CAHSEE exam can retake that portion up to three times in a given year. Students with disabilities are exempt from taking the CAHSEE exam as a requirement for graduation.
