The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) Exam offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI) certifies an individual as a CAPM upon successful completion of the test.
Those who wish to sit for the CAPM Exam must first meet the PMI’s eligibility requirements:
* Candidate must have a high school diploma or an international equivalent
* In addition to the above, the candidate must also have 1,500 hours project management work experience or 23 hours of project management coursework.
The CAPM is a multiple choice exam meant to be taken in a three hour timeframe. A PMI member pays an application fee of $225, while a non-member pays $300 to sit for the exam. The certification lasts for five years at which time CAPMs are asked to renew their certification through the re-exam process.
Only candidates who have a good understanding of project management roles should apply for credentials. The candidates typically work as project sponsors, facilitators, liaisons or coordinators in a work related setting.
After the PMI accepts an application, they send notice of how to sign up for computer based testing at a number of locations. The CBT locations are monitored by the Prometric Company and employ high standards for test taking in the industry. Candidates will be able to choose the location that best suits their geography. The date of the exam is left up to the candidate, but must be scheduled within one year of acceptance. At the closure of the exam, the candidate will receive their basic score that is determined by the amount of right or wrong answers given. A more detailed score comes from the level of right and wrong answers submitted, granting a candidate a proficient, moderately proficient, or below proficiency performance score.
