The California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) offered by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) qualifies successful candidates as fit to be an educator in the state of California. The CBEST explicitly measures the candidate’s core abilities with reading, math, and writing.
Those who pass the test should not be considered eligible to teach those specific courses, but rather educated enough in the areas of interest.
The reading and math portion of the exam cover 50 questions each. These are multiple choice questions where the candidate will be asked either to solve problems or comprehend passages of text. The reading portion covers critical analysis and comprehension style questions. Candidates should be prepared to read a passage and answer questions directly related to it. The math portion covers estimation, measurement, and statistical principles. The candidate should be able to solve questions related to these topics with ease.
The final section of the exam, the writing section, asks the candidate to write on two essay topics. One of the topics will be writing about a personal experience, while the other asks the candidate to write a logical and cohesive argument in essay form.
The test costs $41 to register and an additional $64 to take it at a computer-based site. The computer-based sites are available in most major California cities at Pearson VUE testing centers. Candidates can schedule their exam at a convenient location nearest them. The written test can also be taken in most major California cities, but they are only offered during select times. When registering, be sure to check off the most convenient locations.
