CBGNA Study Guide Review

The CBGNA Exam is offered by the Certifying Board of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (CBGNA). Those who pass the CBGNA Exam receive certification as Gastroenterology Nurse.

Those who wish to take the CBGNA Exam must first meet the eligibility requirements set forth by the CBGNA, including:

* Applicants need a valid RN license from the US to take the exam
* RNs need Gastroenterology and Gastroenterology endoscopy experience
* 2 years of experience in clinical, administrative, supervisory, research capacity with any healthcare institution or accreditation center. Applicants can also apply if they have part-time equivalent of 2 years experience, accumulating 4,000 or more hours in the same capacity.
* Applicants need two signatures of supervisors or physicians in the field to validate work history.

The CBGNA Exam is composed of 150 multiple choice questions. All CBCNA Exams are computer based and administered in computer based testing (CBT) centers throughout the US. The focus of the exam falls in the following categories:

* General Nursing Care
* Gastroenterological Procedures
* Patient Care
* Professional Standards

The majority of the questions fall into the gastroenterological procedures category. The rest of the exam focuses on skills as an RN and prepares the test taker for standards and requirements of the industry. If an RN fails the exam, they are allowed to retake the test at a later date. No information is disclosed to the public, so any failure would be unrecorded.

The CBGNA Exam costs $300 for SGNA members, $385 for non-members, and carries a $50 late registration fee for those missing the deadline. The Gastroenterology certification is good for five years. Re-certification can be purchased at a discount rate. Non-members pay $335 and SGNA members pay $250 for re-certification.
