The Certified Case Manager (CCM) examination is given to all case managers who need certification. A certified case manager works with a healthcare team to ensure that patients are receiving efficient care and services. Generally, a certified case manager is employed in hospitals, state institutions, and other health care entities.
In order to take the examination, the applicant must acquire a college degree that promotes the well-being of patients such as Nursing. In addition, the applicant must have any of the following:
* At least 1 year of work experience in case management with a certified case manager supervisor
* At least 2 years of work experience without supervision of a certified case manager
* At least 1 year of supervising those who provide case management services.
The examination consists of 300 multiple-choice questions that are practice-based. That is why it is advisable to study and review information that are uncommon or special to a specific work setting. Certain online sites offer resources and contain sample questions. All questions are prepared by certified case managers and are under the essential areas in case management. Professional and ethical issues are also included in the examination.
The CCM examination is offered twice a year, in different sites all over the United States. The applicant chooses where he would take the examination. Upon application, a selection letter is sent, listing all the test locations. The examination fee is $290, which includes a non-refundable processing fee of $130.
The Certification for Case Manager is valid for 5 years. At the end of the period, the certified case manager will be evaluated to know if he completed at least 80 continuing education hours. If the case manager fails to meet the condition, a retake of CCM is required to receive recertification.
