Building commissioning practitioners are required to take the Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP) examination for certification. Administered by the Building Commissioning Association (BCA), it assesses the basic knowledge and skills of commissioning practitioners.
The CCP certification is appropriate for qualified practitioners in all areas of specialization as it focuses on the process of building commissioning and the management of building commissioning projects. To be qualified for certification, one should have:
* a high school diploma, a GED, or a higher degree
* at least 36 continuous months of experience as commissioning provider in a project role within 5 years prior to the application
Those who wish to earn the CCP designation must submit an application to be reviewed by the BCA Certification Board and pass the CCP comprehensive examination. The application fee for BCA members is $350, while non-members have to pay $550.
The CCP examination consists of 125 multiple-choice questions. It is given in a 2-hour single session. Drafted by eligible commissioning professionals, the CCP examination is based on the current state of knowledge and practice in the field of building commissioning.
The examination is broken down into the following topics:
* Commissioning process
o pre-design
o design
o construction
o occupancy and operations
* Additional commissioning-related content
Scores will be sent 6 to 8 weeks after the examination. The score report will only inform the applicants if they successfully completed the certification process. The numeric test score will not be provided. If the applicant fails, he can reapply and retake the examination. There is no limit in retaking the examination.
