CDL Study Guide

If you are an aspiring truck driver, or if you would like to work as a school bus driver, you must first get a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). It ensures that drivers of big vehicles and trucks are qualified to do the job.

In order to obtain your Commercial Driver’s License, you need to pass a two-part test:
* A written test, which many have found to be quite challenging, and
* A road CDL test, which would entail you to take a truck out and show the examiner that you are capable of operating it

The test fees could prove to be expensive because in most states, you are required to secure your own truck for the road CDL test. This would mean that you might have to shoulder additional rental fees, on top of the actual fee for the exam itself.

You might also want to check with the Department of Motor Vehicles in your state. The reason is that the CDL examination fees vary from state to state. Also, it is not unusual for certain states to impose additional tests, depending on several circumstances. Examples of these additional special tests are the following:
* HazMat Certification (to be taken if you intend to transport containers full of hazardous substances)
* Air Brakes Test (required if your truck has air brakes)
* Separate test if you intend to drive a double or triple truck.

All the tests under the CDL exam can be difficult. There are a lot of resources available online and in the bookstores that are will be useful to those studying for the Commercial Driver’s License Examination.
