The Certified Energy Manager Exam (CEM) offered by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) certifies an individual as a Certified Energy Manager.
Those who wish to take the CEM Exam must first meet at least one of the AEE eligibility requirements:
* Applicants must have a 4 year degree in engineering or architecture or be registered as professionals in those fields with at least 3 years of energy related experience.
* Applicant needs a four year business degree or in a related field and have accumulated over five years experience in energy related industry.
* Applicant needs a two year degree with at least 8 years of work experience in the energy field.
* Applicant can have 10 years or more experience in the energy industry, specifically engineering or management.
The AEE requires candidates to take a training seminar that prepares the candidate for the actual CEM exam. The seminars are mandatory to take the exam. Candidates must also complete a four hour long pre-test that determines aptitude. There are required points of study for the pre-test, including Codes and Standards, Energy Accounting and Economics, and Energy Audits and Instrumentation.
The CEM Exam is administered at the end of the five day seminar. The applicant must attend in order to take the test. The cost of the seminar runs $200, with an option to attend a remote seminar and then testing center –the remote seminar and testing costs $300.
CEMs must maintain their credentials by accumulating at least credits in continuing education, which includes one credit for continued employment in energy management or engineering field, one credit per year for membership into an engineering society, two credits for taking courses related to energy, two credits for being awarded an energy honor or being published, and one credit for holding an office in a professional engineering society.
