CEN Study Guide Review

The CEN Exam is offered by the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN) to certify qualified applicants as a Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN).

Those who wish to sit for the CEN Exam must first meet the eligibility requirements set forth by the BCEN:
* Applicant must have a valid RN license in the US or a nursing certificate that counts as a nurse equivalent.
* Applicant should have two years of related experience as an Emergency nurse (not required, but recommended).

Those taking the CEN Exam can be expected to answer questions related to:
* Cardiovascular
* Gastrointestinal
* Gynecological, Genitourinary, and Obstetrical Duties
* Maxillofacial Duties
* Neurological Duties
* Orthopedic and Wounds
* Psychological
* Respiratory Duties
* Patient Care
* Substance Abuse
* Shock Duties
* Medical Duties
* Professional Duties

The CEN test is comprised of 175 multiple choice questions that the candidate must answer within a three hour timeframe. The CEN Exam is administered at over 170 AMP assessment centers located throughout the US. Once an application has been approved, the candidate receives a confirmation number. They use the number to schedule their exam appointment at the testing center. The center can usually schedule exams within two days of the call.

The CEN Exam costs $360 for nonmembers and $220 for ENA members. Recertification can be done either through continuing education or by retaking the test. Those who recertify through CE pay $190 as members or $320 as nonmembers. The costs breakdown is the same for those renewing by retaking the exam.
