The CDE Exam offered by the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE) certifies successful candidates as Certified Diabetes Educators (CDE).
Those who wish to take the Certified Diabetes Educator Exam must first meet the following eligibility requirements:
* Applicants must meet one of four discipline requirements:
o Be a licensed clinical psychologist, nurse, occupational therapist, optometrist, physical therapist, or physician in the US.
o Hold a dietary registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
o Have a master’s degree in social work from an accredited college or university.
o Have a master’s degree in nutrition, health teaching, or any area of public health from a US based institution.
* Must have at least 2 years of professional experience as a registered nurse or registered dietician.
* 400 hours of Diabetes educator experience in the past year and 600 additional hours over time, totaling 1000 total experience hours.
* Have at least 15 hours of education activities
The CDE exam costs $350 for those taking the test for the first time, $250 for recertification, and $350 for those applying with lapsed certification. The NCBDE offers certification exams twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. Applicants must meet application deadlines in order to take the exam. The CDE certification examination takes place at AMP Assessment Centers found throughout the US. They have convenient locations to most metropolitan cities in the US.
Once accepted as a candidate for the exam, the candidate will receive a letter in the mail with the date, time and location of the exam.
