The Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) Exam, Certificate Examination for Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM), and Certified Midwives (CM) are tests offered by the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) and the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB) so a successful test taker can become a Certified Midwife.
The tests provided by the NARM and AMCB can only be taken if a candidate meets the following at least one of the following eligibility requirements:
* Candidate should have graduated from an accredited program hosted by the Midwifery education Accreditation Council (MEAC)
* Candidates who are certified as CNMs or CMs through the ACNM Certification Council (ACC)
* Candidates who have received legal recognition to perform midwife duties in their state or country
* Candidates who successfully complete the Portfolio Evaluation Process through NARM, including entry-level midwife, Internationally Educated Midwife or Experienced Midwife.
In addition to those requirements, candidates should have a minimum of 20 birth related experiences, 75 prenatal appointments, and 40 postpartum visits. The certification process each candidate seeks may have different accumulated experience requirements. Be sure to check with NARM for your specific certification route requirements.
The CNM, CPM, and CM exams require a fee of $700 before being given test arrangements at one of the testing centers. Each certification requires a $150 recertification fee after three years. Those who need to take the PEP test to sit for the CM will have to pay a $700 exam fee. The exams are administered in different locations around the US. Some states carry the exam and provide licensure arrangements for candidates. Exams are also offered during the MANA Conference, which is usually held each Fall somewhere in the US.
