CFRE Study Guide

The Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) examination is taken by new fund-raising professionals, volunteers, non-profit administrators and staff, executive directors, board members, and those interested in a fund-raising career. A fund-raising executive is involved in designing and implementing fund-raising programs within a community.

The CFRE tests a fund-raising professional’s mastery of the core areas related to the discipline. It includes baseline knowledge on these areas:
* Current and prospective donor research
* Securing the gift
* Relationship building
* Volunteer involvement and management
* Accountability

The CFRE consists of 225 multiple-choice questions. The 200 items are scored while the 25 items are pretest items. Pretest items do not affect the applicant’s score but will be evaluated for future tests. Candidates for certification are allowed to complete the exam in 4 hours.

Computer-based testing is implemented in North America, while paper-and-pencil exam is used elsewhere. Online registration is available at different certification sites. Once the application form has been submitted, the candidate will choose the preferred exam date and location.

For those taking the computer-based examination, a preliminary result will be given after the test. Approximately 2 weeks later, the full score report will be sent directly to the candidates. For the paper-and-pencil examination, the score report will be sent approximately 4 weeks after the exam.

The scaled score for the examination ranges from 200 to 800. The passing scaled score is 500. The candidate’s raw score, or actual number of questions answered correctly, is converted to the scaled score. The “criterion-referenced” exam model is used in determining the passing score. It means that a panel of certified professionals has set the passing score of 500 before the examination.
