The Child Life Professional Certification Examination offered by the Child Life Council qualifies successful candidates as Certified Child Life Specialists (CCLS).
In order for candidates to sit for the exam, they must first meet the eligibility requirements.
* The candidate must have a bachelor’s degree or be within striking distance (1 semester) of achieving that goal.
* Candidate must have at least 10 college level courses completed in child life or a related subject.
* The candidate needs to have at least 480 hours of clinical child life experience at the time of applying.
The CCLS Written Exam runs $250 for CLC members or $400 for non-members. The computer based version of the exam runs $325 for CLC members or $475 for non-members. The fee covers both the cost of applying and for the test itself. If a candidate does not pass the eligibility standards, then they will be refunded everything but the application fee. In addition to the certification exam fee, candidates must also maintain their credential through annual fees. CLC members pay a $55 annual fee while all others pay $75. The certification lasts for a period of five years assuming the candidate pays the annual fees.
The exam can only be taken during select times each year. The CLC typically offers both a spring and falls schedule.
The CCLS exam consists of 150 multiple choice questions. Candidates will have four hours to complete the exam. The majority of the exam content can be filed under the following three content areas.
* Assessment
* Intervention
* Professional Responsibility
