CHSPE Study Guide

The California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) offered by the California Department of Education (CDE) qualifies successful candidates as proficient in general studies and ready for college course materials.

The CHSPE is only available if the candidate meets the California Department of Education eligibility requirements.

* The candidate must be at least 16 years of age
* If the candidate has been enrolled in the tenth grade for one academic year or more then they will be eligible in lieu of age

The CHSPE consists of two parts, an English and math portion. The candidate must successfully pass both sections in order to pass the CHSPE. The English test can be viewed as two separate sections. The first section focuses on language, like vocabulary, syntax, and grammar usage.

The Language portion of the exam consists of 48 questions. The questions are all multiple choice in nature. The reading portion of the exam consists of 84 total multiple choice questions. Of those, 30 will be on vocabulary and 54 on reading comprehension. The reading questions will ask students to read literary, informational and functional pieces of text to devise the answer to the multiple choice questions. The answer will be woven into the text.

The math portion of the CHSPE consists of 50 multiple choice questions. The candidate will need to know numbers, basic operations, patterns, relationships between sets, algebra, data statistics, and probability.

The CHSPE will be administered in one sitting of three and a half hours. However, there is no time limit. The candidate can take as long as they need to finish the exam. The exam will be administered in the city where the student resides, either at a school or other community building.
