The Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) Exam and Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST) Exam offered by the Council on Certification of Health, Environmental, and Safety Technologists (CCHEST) qualifies successful candidates with the certification as Health and Safety Technician or Technologists.
In order to take the CHST or OHST Exams, a candidate must first meet CCHEST eligibility requirements. The candidate must have a high school diploma and received 40 hours of training contruction safety and health or have nine semester hours of college course credit in the field. The candidate must also have three years of accumulated work experience with at least an Associate’s degree in safety and health. With these qualifications met, a candidate can sit for the exam.
The CHST application fee runs $140 with an examination authorization fee of $265 for US computer-based exams or $365 for computer-based exams delivered outside the US. The OHST fees follow the same price schedule. The tests are administered at computer-based testing centers that facilitate test taking. On the exam day, candidates should arrive at least a half hour early, and should bring all confirmation forms, as well as photo identification.
Each of these certifications require candidates to maintain a level of professional education regarding health and safety. After completing and receiving certification, candidates will need to maintain their credentials by accruing 20 points of continuing education credits over the course of a five years. Those who fail to meet this obligation will lose their certification and must follow the certification pathway a second time to regain certification.
