CI-CPT Study Guide

The CI Personal Trainer (CI-CPT) Certification Examination offered by the Cooper Institute (CI) qualifies successful candidates as certified personal trainers.

In order for a candidate to sit for the CI-CPT exam, they must first meet CI eligibility requirements.

* Candidate must be at least 18 years of age
* The candidate must have valid CPR certification
* New candidates to the field should accrue around 75 hours of independent study in order to do well on the exam (this is not a requirement, but rather a suggestion)

The exam is administered at computer-based testing centers located nationwide. Candidates will be able to choose the location of their exam after having their application approved. The Pearson VUE testing centers handle the test administration. On the exam day, candidates should plan to arrive at least fifteen minutes early. Each candidate should bring their confirmation information and two forms of identification.

The test consists of 150 multiple choice questions. Candidates should be prepared to answer questions related to basic science knowledge, client assessments, exercise regiments, goal setting, and business practices.

Candidates will have three hours to complete the exam. Once the candidate has completed the exam, the facility will allow them to leave with a score report. As long as the candidate achieved a score of 105 or better, then they passed the exam and should receive their certification in the mail.

The CI-CPT certification lasts for a period of three years. The certification must be renewed to remain active. Candidates will need to prove valid CPR certification and 30 hours of contact with clients upon renewing.
