The College-Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) offered by the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) measures a student’s core mathematics ability. The test was used up until 2002 to certify a teacher had the required skills and knowledge to teach in Florida public schools.
The CLAST was administered to students who wished to prove proficiency in English, reading, and math skills. The test included an essay and multiple choice questions. Students would be given a single score for each of the four sections after completing the exam — the score determined whether they had passed or failed.
Students needed to achieve a score of six or better on the essay portion in order to pass. The English arts portion of the exam consisted of many multiple choice questions and the student would need to achieve a 295 on that section. The questions would be derived from syntax, grammar, and vocabulary.
The reading portion of the exam required a score of at least 295 to pass. Students would be asked to answer questions related to passages given to them during the test. The answers would be implied in the reading. The passages may have been informative, educational, or literary in nature.
The final section of the exam, the math portion, also required a cumulative score of 295 to pass. Students would have to answer fundamental questions, as well as statistical, geometrical, and algebraic questions.
The CLAST was administered in Florida colleges and universities using their testing facilities. It was a free test.
