CLAST Study Guide

The College-Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) is a state-mandated achievement test in Florida that measures the communication and mathematical skills that should be acquired by undergraduate students. Students seeking an Associate in Arts or a baccalaureate degree from any Florida public institution must pass the CLAST.

To be eligible for the examination, students should have completed at least 18 hours of degree credits. Students who wish to take the CLAST should seek permission from their private or public institutions. Other examination concerns and inquiries can be directed there as well.

The examination is offered 3 times a year: the last Saturday of September, the third Saturday of February, and the first Saturday of June.

CLAST focuses on 4 academic areas:
* English Language Skills
- lasts for 80 minutes
* Reading
- lasts for 80 minutes
* Essay
- lasts for 60 minutes
* Mathematics
- lasts for 80 minutes

The English skills, Reading, and Mathematics tests are in multiple-choice format. The essay requires 1 or 2 written compositions on the provided topics. The total testing time is approximately 5 hours, which includes the admission process, orientation, and breaks. The time allotted to finish the exam is doubled for retake examinees.

The results of the CLAST are mailed weeks after the scheduled examination. Students seeking an undergraduate degree who have not passed all subsets may be required to pass all 3 subsets before they are allowed to earn more than 60 degree credits. An exemption to the CLAST may be awarded to students who meet certain conditions set by the State of Florida.
