CLEP Study Guide

The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) offered by the College Board lets students test out of certain college level courses, by showing they have the necessary skills to pass the subject. This test gives students college credit for any of the 33 specialized CLEP exams that monitor the student’s knowledge on the subject.

Each CLEP exam costs $77. But that $77 can translate to time saved for other coursework and less time spent in college courses. Many students take CLEP exams to save them money on tuition, but also to help them graduate on time. It’s a good way to skip introductory courses that maybe won’t teach the student anything new.

Students can take CLEP exams on a number of different subjects. Each subject test may present material in a different way than another. Overall the tests utilize multiple-choice questions and can be administered in less than three hours.

The student can take exams under the following main topics (note: there are individual tests available under these topics):

* Composition and Literature
* Foreign Languages
* History and Sciences
* Science and Mathematics
* Business

For each test, the student should be prepared to answer general topics about the subject, provide answer to questions related to more detailed areas, and solve problems and use logic related to content required of the course. For instance the Financial Account exam covers: general topics, income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, and various other questions related to the topic.

The CLEP exams are administered at colleges and universities throughout the US. Candidates can pay for and schedule their exams online.
