CLES Study Guide

The Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist (CLES) Exam offered by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) qualifies successful candidates as Laboratory Equipment Specialists.

Candidates who wish to sit for this exam must first meet eligibility requirements set by the AAMI. The candidate must fulfill one of the following routes.

* Have an associate’s degree in biomedical academic program along with at least two years of full time BMET work experience.
* Have an associate’s degree in electronics technology along with three years of full time BMET work experience.
* Have four years of full time BMET work experience
* Have an associate’s degree in medical lab technology and three years of full time BMET work experience.

The CLES exam runs $295 for application and testing fees. If the candidate requests a special testing center, then the cost increases $100. The exam consists of 150 multiple choice questions. Candidates will have a set time limit to complete the exam.

The CLES exam questions will be drawn from the following topic areas.

* Anatomy & Physiology
* Public Safety in the Healthcare Facility
* Fundamentals of Electricity, Electronics, and Solid State Devices
* Medical Equipment Function and Operation
* Medical Equipment Problem Solving

The candidate will have four hours to complete the exam. The CLES exam is administered at computer-based testing centers located nationwide. Candidates will be able to schedule their exam at a convenient location nearest them. On the exam day, candidates should plan to arrive at least a half hour early and bring along two forms of photo identification.
