CLRE Study Guide

The Contact Lens Registry Examination (CLRE) offered by the National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) qualifies successful candidates as Certified Contact Lens Dispensers.

Candidates who wish to sit for the CLRE must first meet NCLE eligibility requirements. These are very simple requirements.

* The candidate must be at least 18 years of age at the time of applying.
* The candidate must have a high school diploma or GED.

Candidates who have two to three years of experience following optical school would be the ideal candidates for this exam. However, this is not a requirement to take the CLRE, only a suggestion by the NCLE.

The CLRE cost runs $150 that is due at the time of applying for the exam. The CLRE consists of 125 multiple choice questions. Candidates will have two and a half hours to complete the exam entirely. The exam is administered at Professional Examination Services testing centers located nationwide. The questions will be asked through computer software and should give an immediate pass/fail response after completing the entire exam.

The CLRE is only available during set time frames set by the ABO and NCLE. Candidates should be sure to submit their application along with payment within the set time windows, otherwise more fees may be imposed or they may miss the exam until the next cycle.

The content of the exam questions focuses on the following areas.

* Analyze and Interpret Prescriptions
* Fitting and Dispensing Spectacles and Other Ophthalmic Devices
* Using Standard Ophthalmic Equipment
