CNA Study Guide

The Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) Exam offered by the state certification boards qualifies successful candidates as Certified Nurse Assistants (CNA).In order for a candidate to sit for their state’s CNA exam, they must be eligible. Most states require candidates to take and pass a background check.

Many states also require candidates to have completed and graduated from a state-approved nursing assistant training program. In lieu of that experience, some states do allow those with a high school diploma to take the test. Those that fail during that route would only be able to retake the exam after completing a training program. It’s best to check with the state licensing board to determine whether you meet the criteria.

The CNA Exam fee varies from state to state. If you have taken a CNA training course, then you may have paid for the exam during the tuition process. Other courses have you pay the fee directly to the licensing board. Many states administer their CNA exam at computer-based testing centers, like Prometrics. Students can choose a convenient location from a number of testing sites available in each state. Most of the states charge less than $100 to take the exam.

The written portion of the exam consists of multiple choice questions. Typically the test will have between 50 to 100 questions. Candidates will have two hours to complete the exam. The questions will only deal with the CNA’s ability to provide competent care. The second part of the exam asks the candidate to showcase their clinical skills by performing various duties in a timed manner.
