COMLEX Level 1 Study Guide

The Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) Level 1 offered by the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME) qualifies successful candidates as fit to serve the public in the capacity of a osteopathic physician.

Those who want to take the COMLEX-1 will first need to meet certain NBOME eligibility requirements.

* The candidate must have successfully completed their first year at an osteopathic medical school that is accredited by the AOA COCA.
* The candidate must be in good standing as a matriculated student.
* The Office of the Dean must approve the student for eligibility to sit for the exam. This means the NBOME requires these offices to contact them by some means, usually through a medical school diploma or other verified means.

The COMLEX-1 exam consists of multiple choice questions divided into two key areas. The first deals with the clinical presentation of health issues. The types of problems osteopathic generalist physicians might encounter in day-to-day practice. The second type of questions comes from the physicians duties. This section asks the candidate to devise answers from given data and evaluate patients from known symptoms.

The COMLEX Level 1 exam will be administered in one day’s time. The candidate should be prepared to answer questions related to anatomy, behavioral sciences, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, physiology, and other areas of medical knowledge. The exam will take eight hours to complete. The sessions will be broken into two four hour time slots.

The NBOME will send the COMLEX level 1 test scores to the Office of the Dean and to the candidate. Those who wish to check their scores can do so through the NBOME website.
