The Computer Adaptive Placement Assessment and Support System (COMPASS) offered by the ACT, Inc. helps institutions place students in appropriate level of subjects. The test focuses on writing skills, math, and English as a second language.
The COMPASS exam is the first test many college level students have prior to being placed in classes. The exam provides institutions with accurate information about the student’s performance in key subject areas. Schools can customize the test to offer different modules related to various subjects. This can mean a longer or shorter COMPASS experience for the student, depending on how its customized.
The COMPASS exam consists of multiple choice questions as well as a writing essay. The writing essay offers the student a chance to display their English prowess with grammar, vocabulary, structure, and syntax being the main focal points of the grade. The essay will also need to be logical in its reasoning and structure.
The COMPASS exam is approved by the US Department of Education. This means students can receive financial aid after placing well on the exam. ACT offers students remote access to the exam, if the student cannot travel to the test site. Upon finishing the test, the student will receive a personal report of their performance. Institutions may request additional reports, but for the student that is all they see.
Some institutions add regional questions to the test. Those questions will clearly be identified with the student’s response on the student individual report.
