Computed Tomography Study Guide

The Examination in Computed Tomography offered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) qualifies successful candidates as Computed Tomographer. ARRT offers two forms of certification – primary and post-primary. The Computed Tomographer certification falls under the post-primary certification, meaning the candidate will need to be registered with ARRT for Radiography, Nuclear Medicine Technology, or Radiation Therapy.

All candidates must have a high ethical standard by which they live and govern their lives. Any felony charge or other criminal act will negate one’s certification and expel them from the running. Candidates will also need to fulfill experience requirements. The CT Exam runs $200 for ARRT members or $400 for NMTCB candidates. Those who must reapply will need to pay a $175 fee. After having an application approved, candidates will need to take their exam within a 90 day timeframe.

The exam is administered at Pearson VUE testing centers located nationwide. Candidates will be able to schedule their exam in a testing center nearest them after their application has been approved. On the exam day, candidates should plan to arrive at least a half hour early with two forms of identification. One needs to be a government issued photo ID.

The exam lasts for a period of hours. Candidates need to have extensive knowledge regarding CT imaging, including but not limited to medical record evaluations, exam room prep, positioning, parameter selections, precautions, treatment and procedure documentation, and radiation protection, and scanning.

The clinical experience requirement mentioned earlier requires the candidate to document procedures they have done in their clinics or hospitals with signed verification.
