The Certified Corrections Officer (CCO) certification examination offered by the American Correctional Association (ACA) and state certification boards qualifies successful candidates as Certified Corrections Officers.
Candidates who wish to sit for the CCO exam must first meet ACA eligibility requirements.
* The candidate must have a high school diploma or GED
* It is required that the candidate have a year of officer experience in their current work position
The CCO exam runs $140 for ACA members or $175 for non-members. The certification lasts for a period of three years. After three years the candidate will need to renew their certification by proving continuing education credit hours.
The exam consists of 200 multiple choice questions. The majority of the questions will have four possible answers, but there are also true or false style questions. The questions in the exam are not simple regurgitation of information. Candidates should be prepared to analyze situations and choose the best possible answer for granting a logical solution.
The CCO exam focuses on candidate’s ethics, legal issue understanding, general office information, and management and control issues. The candidate should know how to use equipment properly and also have the skills necessary to handle a number of situations. Candidates should know how to manage offenders both verbally and physically. It’s also the responsibility of the candidate to understand many different health and safety risks, as well as movement issues.
The CCO exam is administered at computer-based testing centers located nationwide. Candidates will have the option of choosing a convenient locations nearest them after having their application approved.
