CPCE Study Guide

The Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE) offered by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) qualifies successful students as prepared for entry into various counseling programs throughout the US and the world. The CPCE is given at over 280 different universities and schools throughout the country.

The CPCE is used to determine eligibility and typically given to students waiting for entry into a counseling program. For this reason, the student needs a background in counseling education. The CPCE is typically administered at the governing school, using their testing center facility.

The test is a series of multiple choice questions regarding counseling and related studies. Candidates should be prepared to answer questions on a wide variety of topics related to counseling practices, including the following:

* Human growth and development
* Client appraisal
* Group work
* Helping relationships
* Career and lifestyle
* Social and cultural foundations
* Research and program evaluation
* Ethics
* Group counseling
* Clinical intervention

Candidates will have to answer questions in a time atmosphere. Typically the test has a four hour time frame with no more than 200 multiple choice questions. The test can be administered via computer-based means or paper and pencil. If the candidate has computer-based means, then the pass or fail score should be available immediately following the completion of the exam.

The paper and pencil exam may take a few weeks for the student to receive results. Many testing centers offer quicker service on these tests simply because it determines whether the candidate receives entrance into the program or not.
