CSET Study Guide

The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing developed the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) for prospective teachers whose certification requires this particular exam. The CSET is administered by the Evaluation Systems Group of Pearson.

The CSET is a helpful component for teachers to meet the following certification requirements:
* Basic skills
* Subject matter competence
* No Child Left Behind (NCLB) subject matter
* Educational technology
* Competence requirement for effective teaching of English learners

There are several types of components that make up the CSET. These are:
* Multiple subject component
o composed of 3 separate subtests
o multiple-choice questions and constructed-response questions
* Preliminary educational component
o composed of 2 subtests
* Writing skills component
o composed of a single test with 2 constructed-response questions
* Single subjects component
o consists of 2 to 4 subtests
* Languages Other Then English (LOTE) component
o composed of subtests that assess the methodology of bilingual education, bilingual cultural knowledge, and language communication skills

There are many testing sites throughout California that offer the CSET. There are also emergency registration test areas. These are subject to change based on available space, so checking beforehand is recommended. Out-of-state test areas are seasonably offered, but each testing site requires a minimum number of applicants before the CSET could be administered there.

Test scores are released both to the applicant and to the Commission of Teacher Credentialing. Prior to receiving official test results, an unofficial score may be viewed online. However, a score may only be viewed once, and is posted for approximately 2 weeks only.

Testing fees depend on the number of sub tests an applicant will be taking per CSET component. There are also additional service fees for the following:
* Asking for an additional copy of test results
* Verifying score
* Requesting to clear an account (in case of previous unsettled accounts)
