CUNY Study Guide

All students of the City University of New York (CUNY) must take and pass the CUNY Proficiency Examination (CPE) in order for them to graduate. As such, the exam is usually taken in the semester immediately following the completion of their 45th credit. Not taking the exam when required to so is equivalent to forfeiture of that one chance to take the exam. The exam measures whether the students have the skills needed to succeed in college and in the workplace.

The exam is administered 4 times a year: October, January, March, and June. CUNY students are required to register for the exam 2 to 3 weeks before the scheduled date.

The exam lasts for 3 hours and consists of:
* Analytic reading and writing (2 hours)
- 2 reading selections are given to students who will be asked to write a focused essay from their understanding of the selections
* Analyzing and integrating information from graphs and text (1 hour)
- graphs or charts are given to the students together with a brief reading passage and they will be asked to analyze the same

Exam results are sent out through a letter from CUNY Central. The applicant will also receive a detailed report on his performance in the exam. Those who fail the exam have 2 other chances to retake the exam and pass it. However, on the third take, an applicant must complete and file an Appeal Form at the CUNY Testing Center. This appeal is subject to review by the New York CPE Appeals Committee.
