DSST Study Guide

The Dantes Subject Standardized Tests (DSST) offered by the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) provide military personnel a head start into college coursework. There are 37 DSST Exams in total, ranging the gamut of college level courses. Those with experiential learning would be likely candidates as well as those who served in a military capacity.

The DSST Exams can be delivered to military personnel stationed in foreign countries, where they can take the test in traditional pencil and paper format. In the states, candidates can key up the test at Thomson Prometric test centers and various Universities and Colleges throughout the US. Civilians can also take the exams. Everyone who takes a test has to pay an upfront fee to reserve space at the testing center, depending on the location this can be as much as $25. The DSST test centers offer candidates instant results for their tests.

Candidates can receive college credits in 38 different subjects, including business, math, physical science, social sciences, technology, and humanities. The American Council of Education (ACE) approves the program and grants college credit for those who pass the exams. Some individual institutions set higher standards than the ACE in regards to a passing grade on the DSST, so be sure to check with the desired school before taking the DSST.

The DSSTs are typically multiple choice questions and candidates are allotted three hours to complete the exam. Each DSST has an ACE recommended passing score associated with it. Be sure to check with the institution for further requirements.
