Candidates who wish to sit for any of the EMT exams can do so at Pearson Vue computer-based testing centers located throughout the US. At the time of applying to sit for the exam, the candidate will be required to pay a registration fee, typically below $100 to take the exam.

The EMT-B consists of both multiple choice questions alongside practical questions pertaining to first aid, CPR, oxygen needs, patient care, airway and ventilation needs, and shock management. The additional topics include EKG readings, advanced respiratory and airway support, cardiac support, traumatic life support needs, pediatric life support, pharmacology, and advanced resuscitation measures. Candidates are allotted two hours and fifteen minutes to take the exam. A score of 85% must be achieved in order to pass this test. The exam costs $110 to take.
