The Family Medicine Certification Examination offered by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) certifies successful candidates as Board Certified Family Medicine Physician.
Before a candidate can sit for the Family Medicine Exam, they must first meet the eligibility requirements set forth by the ABFM. Each candidate must have completed three years of training in a Family Medicine residency program accredited by the ACGME. The candidate must have completed a M.D. or D.O. from an accredited university as well.
The exam consists of five separate sections. Each candidate chooses a separate module to take, which contains 45 multiple choice questions and counts as a section. The test begins with 120 multiple choice questions and an optional break, the moves into the selected module. After the module section, candidates take the remaining three sections in subsequent order. Section three contains 45 multiple choice questions, section four contains 80 multiple choice questions, and section five contains 80 multiple choice questions. All in all, the exam takes over 8 hours to complete, with three scheduled, but optional breaks.
The Family Practice Exam can be taken a number of days in July. Open registration began in January 2010 and cost $1,250 to February 28, 2010. After that date passed, the registration fee increased to $1,400 through all of March, $1,550 for those who register in April, $1,700 for those who register in May, and $1,850 for those who register in June. Candidates are expected to pay the registration fee in full at the time of application. The application process is handled online.
After enrollment, the candidate receives correspondence that informs them of how to schedule the exam. Everyone needs to enroll by July 1st.
