FSOT Study Guide Review

All aspiring diplomats of the US Department of State have to take the United States Foreign Service Officer Test – FSOT – (formely FSWE) administered by the ACT. The FSOT covers the following topics:

* diplomatic history
* international political economy
* US government
* World geography
* Other pertinent information useful for diplomats

In order to take the FSOT, an applicant must meet the following requirements:
* At least 20 but no more than 59 years old at the time of application
* A citizen of the United States
* Willing to take a worldwide assignment

Proficiency in a foreign language is not required. Those who have previously been separated or have retired from Foreign Service may not take the FSOT.

An applicant for the FSOT must register online. Online registration takes about 3 hours to complete. No amendments are allowed once the applicant has submitted the registration package, save for updating contact information. Once registered, an applicant has 12 months to take and pass the exam.

The FSOT lasts 6 hours and comprises 3 sections:
* Job knowledge section
- measures the candidate’s mastery of the exam coverage
* English expression section
- tests writing and grammar
* Biographical data section
- assesses the candidate’s skills, interests, and academic and extra-curricular experiences

Apart from the aforementioned, the FSOT also contains an essay-writing section that lasts for 30 minutes. After passing the written exams, the next step is an oral assessment that takes approximately an entire day.

Those who wish to retake the exam must wait for 12 months from the date they last took the exam.
