Gateway/TCAP Study Guide

The Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (Gateway/TCAP) is a testing program administered by the Tennessee Department of Education through Tennessee public schools to their students at the end of every school year beginning in the third grade.

Some Tennessee schools periodically give a norm-referenced version of the TCAP to kindergarten students and those in the first and second grades, in order to check how these students fare when compared with their peers around the world.

This examination measures what the student has learned for the entire school year. Specifically, the test covers the following topics:
* reading
* language arts
* math
* science
* social studies

The Gateway/TCAP is an offshoot program influenced by the No Child Left Behind Act. It currently includes the following tests:
* Achievement Test
- administered to students in Grades 3 to 5
* Writing Test
- requires students to write an essay about a given topic
* Competency Test
- multiple-choice test that measures student achievement in mathematics and language arts
* Gateway Test
- new testing program for End of Course Test focusing on key subjects
* End of Course Test
- given to high school students

Scores are given at the start of the next school year. Students are rated based on proficiency levels: below proficient, proficient, or advanced. Those who score poorly may not be permitted to advance to the next grade level, or may be subjected to mandatory helping programs. Schools are also evaluated on how their students generally perform. Parents are also guided as to which areas of their children’s academic life need more improvement.
