The Tests of General Educational Development (GED) offered by the American Council on Education (ACE) grants a student the equivalent of a high school diploma if they successful pass the exam.
The GED is only available to adults who are 18 years or older. The test runs $35 for all five sections. If a student fails one test, they can retake it later for a cost of $7. The test can only be taken three times per year. If you happen to fail, then you need to wait at least sixty days before retaking it.
Aside from a high school diploma, the GED is the next best thing. The credential is widely recognized in the US and abroad. Students who need to take the GED can study the on their own, in groups, or via websites before taking the exam. The exam is not available online, but can be taken at over 3,400 testing centers worldwide. The computer-based testing centers offer a safe, quiet testing environment for the GED exam.
Students who take the GED will need to be prepared to answer questions related to English, sentence structure, social studies, sciences, math, and literature. Students will not need a great deal of information on each of these topics, but being well versed in them cannot do any harm. The GED requires a ninth grade level of reading, writing, and math.
Students should be prepared to write essays, examine sentences, and read passages and interpret meaning. The reading portion of the exam will not exceed the ninth grade reading level and should use language common to GED study materials.
