The Georgia High School Graduation Tests (GHSGT) offered by the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) determines whether a student receives a Georgia diploma from their high school or not.
The GHSGT exams cover five subject areas.
* Mathematics
* Science
* English
* Social Studies
* Writing
Students are given the exams during the course of a few days, not all at once. They will be given adequate time to finish the exam and have them spaced out for them to be able to focus on the new subject. Prior to each exam, teachers will give students the exam instructions.
Students can expect these tests to be administered via paper and pencil for the time being. In the future, they may be offered as computer-based exams, but for now they will be paper and pencil. This does limit how quickly the results can be given to the student, but within a relatively short period of time students should know how they fared on each of the five tests.
The tests are graded on a scale to 600. To pass the exam, students need to achieve better than a 500 on each exam. If a student fails to receive a 500 on one of their exams, they can retake it at a later time. They can retake as many times as necessary to have access to their diploma. Without passing each exam, a student will not receive their diploma.
The exams present information in multiple choice questions with some constructed response style questions as well.
