The Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) is a standardized exam designed by business schools to assess graduate business school candidates. It is a computer-adaptive exam that tests an applicant’s verbal, quantitative, and analytical skills. Recently however, writing skills of the examinees are also assessed.
The GMAT does not measure the business know-how or job skills of the applicant. Rather, it aims to assess the knowledge gained by the applicant while he was in school.
The GMAT is regularly administered in the United States, Canada, and a number of countries all over the world. To take the GMAT, an applicant can either register online or via telephone. The uniform testing fee is $250. A list of designated testing centers is posted at the official GMAT website, and an appointment may be made at any given day. However, testing dates vary depending on where the applicant plans to take the examination.
The test takes approximately 4 hours to finish, with 2 breaks that last 10 minutes in between. Using calculators when taking the exam is not allowed. Wearing digital watches is prohibited, too. These items will be confiscated prior to the start of the exam.
Unofficial scores are available for viewing immediately after an examinee finishes the GMAT. The official score report will be sent to an applicant’s email or via snail mail 20 days after the exam.
Exam scores are considered valid for 5 years from the date of the examination. The test may be retaken as often as the applicant would like, provided he does not take it more than once per month.
