Indiana’s Graduation Qualifying Exam (GQE) offered by the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) qualifies whether a student should receive their diploma at the end of their senior year or not. Students will be tested on their writing, math, and reading skills as they begin their journey into the workforce, higher education, and life in general.
Students will be given a time slot for the GQE during their school year. Typically students will take the exam in the fall of their sophomore semester and have an opportunity to retake the exam in the spring if there is the need. The test is administered for six hours each day over the course of three days. During that time, students will be given instructions by their teachers on how to complete varying sections related to math, reading, and writing.
The exam is a standardized test given to all students in Indiana. The English questions are geared for content through Grade 9. The math questions stop at grade 8 with some algebra involved. Students should know basic math, geometry, and a little algebra.
In the past, students took one large test that identified how well they knew math, reading, and English subjects. Now the test can be taken at varying times, depending on when the student completes Algebra and English 10. Immediately following the completion of the courses, students will be given the broken down tests related to the subjects, so the material will be fresh and easier to remember. This alleviates the problem of years having passed for certain students who took the Algebra or English courses in advance programs.
