The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) offered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) acts as a gateway for students to enter business schools, higher tiers of education, and even fellowships. The test gauges how well an applicant will fare on graduate level work. The GRE also offers many different subject tests used to gauge how well a student will fare in a particular field of study. Currently candidates can take Science, Math, Computers, or English Literature GRE subject exams.
The main GRE exam assesses a candidate’s analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning through standardized multiple-choice questions. The exam is administered at computer-based testing centers located throughout the US and across the globe. Candidates can schedule their exam at a location nearest them. The GRE can be taken any time of year at a testing center. Paper test can only be taken on specified dates. Typically candidates will have a choice of three dates within a calendar year. Candidates can only take the GRE once each year.
The general GRE costs $160 to take. The ETS does offer lower rates for those in poor economic conditions. The GRE is currently broken into three separate sections: the verbal section, quantitative section, and analytical writing section. The verbal section examines a student’s reading comprehension, analogies, and vocabulary through carefully worded passages and questions. The quantitative section asks students to choose the best answer for high level mathematical questions that do not exceed the high school level. The analytical writing section asks students to write on an issue and an argument. The writing section has a total of six points that are awarded in half point intervals.
Doing well on the GRE means you should study a broad array of topics, retain the information, and focus on exam day.
