The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) subject tests offered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) are commonly used as an admission device for higher level graduate studies in major universities. The tests examine at length the student’s ability to retain information as well as draw logical and precise conclusions.
The subject tests differ from the main GRE in that they focus solely on one particular topic and review the information in depth so as to ensure the student has a very good overall understanding of the material.
The GRE subject tests cover the field of study at great length. Many students take close to a year to study for their GRE subject test. The student may take a subject test in any one of the following areas:
* Biochemistry
* Biology
* Chemistry
* Computer Science
* English Literature
* Math
* Physics
* Psychology
The subject tests are used by fellowship panels and graduate schools to determine eligibility into educational programs. Students can take the subject tests three times a year in October, November, or April, but only through paper and pencil means, not computer-based.
Each subject test presents the material in a different form and length. Most of the tests use multiple-choice questions and do not exceed 200 questions. For instance, the Biology subject test has 200 multiple-choice questions with five possibilities available for each question. The test covers everything that follows: Cellular and molecular biology, organismal biology, and ecology and evolution topics at length.
