HSPT Study Guide

The High School Placement Test (HSPT) offered by the Scholastic Testing Service (STS) tests eighth grade students for ninth grade placement reasons. The student takes the test as a form of admission procedure to see which school in a district would make the best fit for their current academic level. The test comes in two forms, an open or closed form.

The open form HSPT offers schools an older version of the closed form test that they can grade using a kit the STS provides. The closed test offers newer, more refined questions, while the older one provides a more cost effective solution for many schools. The student should not be affected by either choice of exams.

The exam itself can be administered in two hours and a half. The student answers multiple-choice questions on a number of different content areas and subjects. The student should be prepared to answer questions related to verbal and quantitative skills, reading, math, and language questions. The math and reading will be attuned to the materials taught at that level.

There are optional tests that may be administered, like the science, mechanical aptitude, and Catholic religion portions. These are not included in the original exam, but can be added upon request. The open test offers schools, parents, and students a wide view of their achievements. Students will be given a report that tells how they measure against students nationwide.

Guardians will be given the same reports and be able to identify weaknesses in the student’s understanding, so they can better work with the child on homework. Administrators of schools use the scores to place students in their most appropriate level of classroom teaching.
