Administered by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE), the IBLCE exam measures the competence of professionals in lactation consulting.
In order to be eligible to take the exam, an applicant must meet any of the following criteria:
* Graduate of a lactation-specific academic program
* Licensed or registered health care professional
* Provider of breastfeeding counseling, in a capacity other than a health care professional, and work or volunteer within a supervised setting
* Completed a mentored lactation educational plan
The topics covered by the exam revolve around maternal and infant health:
* anatomy
* normal physiology and endocrinology
* normal nutrition and biochemistry
* immunology and infectious disease
* pathology
* pharmacology and toxicology
* psychology, sociology, and anthropology
* growth parameters and developmental milestones
* interpretation of research
* ethical and legal issues
* breastfeeding equipment, technology and techniques
* public health
* chronological periods
The exam is composed of 200 multiple-choice questions:
* 125 cognitive questions based on scenarios
* 75 questions based on photographs
The exam is administered in 2 sessions. The applicant must answer 100 questions per session. The scores in both sessions are added to come up with the total score of the examinee, which is then rated as Pass or Fail.
The IBLCE has been translated to several languages, but this is subject to the availability of suitable translators, as well the demand for such translation. At least 15 applicants must have requested and paid the exam fees, before the translation of the exam could be carried out.
The IBLCE is given once a year only, usually in the month of July. Early registration usually starts by the end of March.
