LEED Study Guide

The LEED for New Construction Exam and LEED for Existing Building Construction Exam offered by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) register successful test takers as LEED Accredited Professionals.

Typically those who take the LEED exams have a background in construction in one form or another. The individual may be a contractor, construction manager, project manager, designer, architect, building owner, supplier, or other link in the construction industry chain. This voluntary course grants those individuals with the credentials necessary to begin building with green ventures in mind. The high performance and sustainable approach to construction is the key.

In order to sit for either LEED exam, a candidate must agree to abide by the exam policy regarding appeals, document professional experience in the past three years, as it pertains to LEED registered projects, and submit the application knowing that it may be audited.

The LEED AP exam costs $100 to apply and an additional $300 for USGBC National Members or $450 for non-members. The credential needs to be renewed every two years, due to the changing nature of the industry. The LEED exams are comprised of 100 multiple choice questions in two separate sections, totaling 200 total questions.

Candidates have two hours for each section. At no point will they be able to take a break longer than a few minutes. The test is timed, so speed and effective use of time is imperative.

Those who take the exam and fail one portion may take the other part as a retake. The two sections are green associate and specialty portion. The test is administered at computer-based testing centers located throughout the US. The test can be taken at any time after successfully applying.
