The Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) offered by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is a standardized test given to Michigan elementary and middle school students each year. The test measures the student’s academic progress so administrators, teachers, and parents can help their students achieve better results.
Currently the MEAP is only given to students in grades 3 through grades 9. Students taking the MEAP will be tested across all subjects in a period of several days. The tests measure the students writing skills, reading comprehension, basic vocabulary, social studies, science, and math. Each level of test will be attuned for material appropriate to the grade level.
The reading portions of the exam are often accompanied by written response questions to gauge how much of the text the student comprehended. These short answer writing questions offer a glimpse into the student’s writing mechanics as well. Each grade level has increasing more depth given to them in terms of how much they need to write, respond, and answer.
The MEAP exams are given over a course of one month, typically in the fall. The teacher will give students a set amount of time to complete each section they assign and students will do the work right in the classroom. After taking the exam, students will receive their scores several weeks to months later. After the eighth grade the MEAP test disappears and on comes the Merit test.
