NPS Study Guide

The Neonatal/Pediatric Respiratory Care Specialty Examination (NPS) offered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) measures a candidate’s essential knowledge required of respiratory therapists.

Candidates who wish to sit for the NPS must first meet the NBRC eligibility requirements. The candidate should be a registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) with at least one year of clinical experience in neonatal/respiratory care after the certification was achieved.

The NPS Exam consists of 140 multiple choice questions. Of the 140, 120 are used towards the final score and 20 are used to create tests in the future. The test quizzes candidates on three content areas, including clinical data, equipment and therapeutic procedures. Candidates will have three hours to complete the exam from start to finish.

When applying for the NPS, candidate must also pay a $200 examination fee. A discount of $50 can be had if the candidate applies if the CRT or RRT applies for the exam within sixty days of achieving their credential. The exam is administered at computer-based testing centers six days a week. The testing centers can be found all over the US, so a convenient location should be available for all applicants.

After a candidate applies, they will receive correspondence regarding how to schedule their exam at the testing center. The exam date and time should be clearly followed. Candidates should arrive at least a half hour early for the exam and bring two forms of photo and signature ID.
